I don’t think we will bother with a review of yesterday shall we, none of the games meant much anyhow!
Oh go on then if I have too.
I watched all the games and it seems we had a referee-disaster free day. I thought the ref in the England game was excellent. (See I can be nice).
Columbia first up and they won comfortably, 10/11 was a massive price in my opinion so my wee dabble there came good. The 2-1 or 3-1 looked homed and hosed to land when the ball arrived on Gekas head 6 yards out for Greece and whilst some instances I may use hyperbole – I WOULD NOT HAVE MISSED THAT!!! so that went down the pan and sorry Kostas me old mate I just thought Greece were awful. Columbia look to have some exciting players but difficult to gauge against such abject opponents.
The Uruguay v Costa Rica game was a total surprise for me. Uruguay were poor, Costa Rica looked quite good and the result was deserved. Not having any financial interest in the game my focus was on these teams being in England’s group and I will be honest I think we will now be making our way home after 3 games. Uruguay will have Suarez back and it is a must win for both sides which I think will suit them more than it suits us.
It is amazing what you hear when football tournaments are on. I would love nothing more than England to win a major championship in my lifetime, but I am realistic enough to know it is almost certainly not going to happen. Listening to people talk last night you hear some right old garbage. Lest we forget England have never even reached a Euro Championship Final where the likes of Russia (then Soviet Union), Greece, Denmark, Yugoslavia, Belgium, Portugal, Czech Republic all have, alongside the European power houses of Spain, France, Germany and Italy. I think we really do overestimate our place in world football. I heard pre game that if we beat Italy last night we had a right chance to win the World Cup and best of all someone then claimed Rooney is better than Suarez. I am not sure whether drink or narcotic substances were involved but straight jackets should have been!
So onto the Italy v England game and in my opinion I thought we were poor. This is a poor Italian side and we just didn’t test them. Yes we had possession and passed it around in front of them at times but the keeper never really had much to do of any danger, shots from 25 yards which he could see coming are not real chances in my eyes. Rooney other than the cross for the goal was once again poor and playing left just subjected us to giving away huge space to the Italian right side. I just expected more. They hit the bar, the post and had one cleared off the line, Pirlo must of had another forcefield round him as England players stood 5 yards off him so he must have something in the way, or terrible body odour!
I have read all the reports, Gerrard and Hodgsons comments, so I watched it again this morning and still have the same conclusion. Yes better than 4 years ago, that is because we were dire 4 years ago. We are a poor side and a finisher like Suarez will make us pay, if fit. I am sure come Thursday though we will all be ready to win the World Cup again!
The Ivory Coast then started slowly against Japan but came back to win 2-1 and that advice was landed at 11.5 so the profits are now on the march which is nice. Easy game this International football. Ivory Coast now have a really good chance of progressing through the group and I personally think they are a team we need in the knockouts for entertainment, they have some great players… and Gervinho!
Onto today then, first up we have Switzerland v Ecuador and you would think one of these two will finish second behind France so it is all to play for. That may make it a cautious game and Hitzfield has done well with the Swiss they only let 6 goals in qualifying but I think they are light up front relying too much on Drmic. Ecuador have a distorted recorded as playing at altitude makes their home form exceptional only losing twice in the last 36 games. That said away defeats to Argentina, Chile and Colombia can be excused as they are 3 very good teams. I think Ecuador may surprise but I am not confident in any bet on the game so will keep the wallet shut for this one. We may see the first draw of the group games in this one but odds of 2/1 don’t excite me.
In the second game for that group France take on Honduras at 8 PM and it should be a straight forward win for France who are as short as 1/3 for victory tonight. Honduras concede goals to everyone (bar England of course) and the likes of Pogba and Benzema could fill their proverbial boots tonight. France once so dominant seem to be coming out of their slump of recent years and certainly in the last few years have improved greatly. They will of course miss Ribery but should still have too much for the teams in this group.
Over 2.5 goals is the marginal favourite and I will back the French to get most of the way there by HT. 2-0 half time score at 7.6 appeals for a small wager. France Asian Handicap of -1.5 will also receive a small bit of financial interest
The correct scores of 3-0 and 3-1 odds are not overly appealing so I will stick with just the two bets above
The 11PM game sees one of mine and most peoples pre-tournament favourites Argentina play Bosnia. The Argentinian camp must have been buoyed by watch Brazils stuttering performance and have to believe they have a great chance to take the trophy home. The front line reads like a dream team Aguero, Messi, Di Maria, Higuain (imagine that lot in Spurs shirts, we would soon ruin em). Argentina beat Bosnia 2-0 in November in a friendly without Messi and I expect them to win comfortably again tonight. It is simply trying to find a bet of any value. 2/5 I think is a value price for Argentina but doesn’t excite me as a bet. Messi is odds on to score, Aguero just above Evens and the CS prices are on the skinny side also.
I will have a small dabble on the Unders at 2.42 swimming against the market. Argentina to win both halves at 3.15 is where I shall place my other interest in the game.
If you have not got a Coral account, open one and back Argentina at 4/1 for a tenner, lay it back and a Macdonalds, Starbucks or whatever your ill is will be paid for!
