Well you couldn’t chalk that up could you. No wonder at times football trading goes wrong. The Tico’s turn over the Azzurri and the whole group is on it’s head with England out after 2 games. I really could not see that coming but in the aftermath they played well and deserved it. Now Costa Rica have secured their passage into the knock out rounds a huge game ensues between Italy and Uruguay. So no joy in that game yesterday and a poor decision for Costa Rica not to get a penalty a minute before they scored. I am not sure Robbie Savage had to keep screaming “It’s a penalty” though!

For those who have added comments I agree Hodgson should probably stay as we do have no one else and that is not the problem. We have a lack of strength in depth in players and also though a real lack of coaches. If the general view is, we want an English coach going forward who is there? I cannot think of anyone I would give the job to, so Hodgson has it by elimination but we still need to plan for after him. The whole thing needs looking at and my main point is they can talk and pontificate all they like, the players are not good enough, even the young ones and the Premier League rules the roost.

My biggest bet of the tournament so far won on France who destroyed Switzerland racing to a 5 goal lead before taking the foot of the gas. France are looking accomplished and will be handful for any team. None of the side market bets came to fruition though.

Ecuador v Honduras was entertaining we didn’t get the 3-2 but the scores did trade lower. It was an open game and but for some better finishing the goals would have come. They are two pretty poor football sides but I couldn’t help but enjoy the game. The BTTS and Overs bets landed in the game as advised.

Today sees a couple of the big guns back in action for their second games.

Argentina v Iran is the first game and change in formation should see Argentina through comfortably. They did stutter first half against Bosnia but when changing to 4-3-3 got a grip on the game. Messi has already stated the players prefer that set up and I expect them to start in that way today.

At 1.16 Argentina won’t be getting any of my money and the 28.0 shock of Iran is just not going to happen.

The market has goals for Argentina obviously and even 4-0 is a single figure price.

Only one thing for me to do in this situation, Iran can be difficult to break down so I will run against the market and back the Unders at 2.6 and hope Iran stick to their recent stubborn resistance style. They have kept clean sheets in 4 of the last 5, barely conceded in qualifying. Today of course sees them up against the best forwards in the world but they may just hang on long enough to make it a viable trade later in the game for at least a free bet.

The mouth watering Germany take on Ghana next. Thye showed the efficiency of a slick Mercedes in destroying Portugal, albeit a 10 man Portugal. I thought Ghana were pretty woeful against the US with the continued punting of long speculative balls up front. The German defence will mop that up for fun. I think this could be another matter of “How many?” There is no chance of Ghana shutting out Germany (cue the 0-0) tonight and I think even 1.35 is generous.

I will have a few small CS interests. I will play 3-0 at 10, 3-1 at 12.5 and 4-0 at 18 with a view to trading.

I will also back Germany to win both halves at 2.72

The final game is Nigeria v Bosnia and this is a simple bet for me. I think Nigeria are one of the worst teams in the competition, they are ranked correctly 23 places lower than todays opposition. They have nothing up front, nothing in midfield and the defence is not much cop. If Obi Mikel gives the ball away like he did against Iran, Dzeko and co could be filling their boots and securing the second spot in the group. I see this all a bit of a mismatch so the 1.93 on Bosnia looks very appealing for me to get involved with tonight.

I will also have small plays 0-3 and 1-3 at 20 and 19 respectively. (if your still up these can trade of course)

  1. Great result for Chile last night and good luck to them in the next round they might cause a few teams a few problems they may lack skill but they more than make up for it in spirit and team work. France have proven themselves to be very useful against a side who were known for their defensive prowess, I think France will go far in the tournament.

From a trading point of view yesterday was a bit of a disaster for me, I had layed over 3.5 goals and 4.5 goals in the France v Switzerland with the intention of trading out in-play but two goals within a minute ruined the market and both bets of course lost, at least I won my Lay the draw bet, and made some losses back in the Ecuador game.

I will need to watch the market tonight to find a bet in the Argentina game. I’ll be watching both the over 3.5 and over 4.5 goal market I need them to move a little before making a move and also assess how Argentina are playing tonight.

The best game for trading tonight is the Iran v Nigeria game I have already layed the over 3.5 goals market and depending on how the game is played I might not even trade out In-Play as I can’t see either side scoring many goals.

In the Germany Ghana match the value for me is in the over 4.5 goals market which I have backed and will trade out after 2 goals, unless of course Germany look rampant in which case I might let it run, I certainly expect 3 goals in the game and this will put the price down to a nice trading level.

  2. Hello Ian,

Another thoughtful well-written post – thanks very much for putting the effort and time in. I must admit I thought I was the only one who found Robbie Savage’s style of commentary very annoying. For me, his reaction to Cahill’s great goal (btw, not the best ever World Cup goal, in my opinion) almost ruined the goal. How long do we have suffer him for?

Enjoy the rest of your World Cup.

    Regards,

    Mick
